These numbers likely didn’t come from a math textbook. They came from the actual wooden barrels used in these trades. US Specifics and Proof Spirits

The United States added its own layers of complexity. A 40-gallon barrel for proof spirits is legally recognized here. But federal taxes on fermented liquors are calculated on a 31-gallon barrel. You can store 40 gallons, but you pay taxes on 31. That discrepancy alone is worth investigating.

Then there is the petroleum barrel. It holds 42 gallons. Where did that standard come from? The most likely explanation lies in the American Southwest. Casks of this capacity were readily available there. Standardization often follows supply chains. If the barrels are already there, you use them.

Dry Weight and Industrial Standards

Dry-weight barrels are measured by mass, not volume. A barrel of fish, beef, or pork weighs 200 pounds. A barrel of cement weighs 376 pounds.

These numbers reflect the commodities themselves. You pack salted fish differently than you pack Portland cement. The unit adapts to the product.
