Kathryn broke the cycle. At 66. In Denver. She weighed 220 lbs for most of her life. Now she is 133 lbs.
My blood pressure is great; my cholesterol great. I feel really good.
But Zepbound costs $450 a month. That kills retirement travel. So she stretches doses. Makes pills last longer.
Change comes July 1.
A Bridge to Where?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is launching the GLP-1 Bridge pilot. Some adults over 65 pay only $50 monthly for weight-loss shots. It’s supposed to help people like Kathryn who struggle to pay. Or never could.
Annie Moore runs an internship at CU Health. She calls it a massive social experiment. Everyone relies on CMS websites. Pharmacies must process prior authorizations efficiently. Has this happened before?
No.
“I just don’t quite know how smooth it’s going to be,” Moore said.
About 5 million seniors used GLP-1 drugs in late 2025. They work well. That is the only reason they exist.
But seniors stop using them faster than younger folks. Cost cuts deep.
Who Gets In?
Three drugs qualify: Foundayo, Wegovy, Zepbound. You need Medicare Part D. You cannot have Type 2 diabetes or fatty liver. Those conditions already have coverage. Your BMI must hit 35.
Demand will spike. Christopher Weber treats obesity in Milwaukee. He sees five patients a day who can’t afford this. Clinics will be busy. Administrative overhead looms.
Wait for three or four months.
Moore expects frustration. Cash payers know the benefits. They will rage against delays. Some earn little. $600 a year still stings.
The pilot ends in 2027.
“Obesity is not a temporary problem,” says Dorothea Vafiadis from the National Council on Aging. By 2028 patients ask: What do I do then? Weight returns. Always does.
Carmin lives in Denver too. Healthcare worker. Six major weight swings since childhood. Teased often. She saved money instead of buying meds.
Now she hopes for Christmas or spring. She wants old clothes to fit. Again.
If the government walks away in two years, what happens to Kathryn’s gains? We wait to see.
