Although Henry Ridley is often referred to as the “Father of Rubber”, he was actually a tenacious botanist who refused to take no for an answer.
Born in 1855 at West Harling Hall in Norfolk, Ridley grew up to be a key figure in turning the Malay Peninsula into the center of the world’s rubber trade. Without his specific approach and tireless efforts, modern cars and manufacturing would probably be very different than they are today.
Ridley’s journey to tropical Asia didn’t start right away. He received a degree in science from Exeter College, Oxford in 1877. He worked for 10 years in the botanical department of the British Museum. It was solid work, but it didn’t define his accomplishments.
In 1888 he left London for Singapore. His new role? Director of the Straits Settlements Forest Department and Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
This move changed everything.
At that time, rubber was extracted from the Hevea brasiliensis tree in the Amazon region. The British desperately needed a reliable resource, but extracting the latex without killing the trees was nearly impossible. Ridley sensed an opportunity. He began experimenting with Para rubber trees in Singapore’s humid climate. He realized that, if used correctly, it could be thrive as plantation crops.
His breakthrough was a special tapping method. This allows the latex to be efficiently harvested while keeping the tree alive and producing more latex later. He wasn’t just growing plants; he was engineering an industry.
From those initial plots,
Beyond the Tapping Knife
