Vomiting is the most frequent complaint in veterinary clinics. Nature uses it as a purge mechanism to expel irritants like spoiled food. But that is not the only reason a dog throws up.
The cause can be far more serious. Viral infections. Liver disease. Pancreatitis. Kidney failure. You cannot tell the difference by looking. You need a professional diagnosis if the dog is depressed. You need a doctor if there is blood.
Here is how to handle the initial crisis at home.
Immediate Actions for Vomiting Dogs
The first rule is restraint. Starve the gut.
Step 1
Remove all food and water for 12 to 24 hours. This gives the stomach lining time to settle. Dehydration is a risk, but forcing water often triggers more vomiting. Patience is key here.
Step 2
Check for red flags. Does the vomit contain blood? Is it happening constantly? If yes, stop reading and call your vet now. Do not wait. If the vomiting has stopped and the dog seems stable, move to Step 3.
Reintroducing Food and Water
Once the fasting period is over and no vomiting has occurred, restart slowly.

Offer water in small amounts. Start with 1 to 2 ounces. Wait. If the dog keeps it down, introduce a bland diet.
Use a 50:50 mixture of boiled, skinless chicken and rice. Feed small portions. If the dog holds that down, begin transitioning back to regular food over the next two days. Mix increasing quantities of regular kibble with the bland diet until the stomach is fully recovered.

Pepto-Bismol is often considered safe for dogs. But dosing is tricky.

When to Worry
