The Pulkovo Observatory sits near St. Petersburg, Russia. It has been watching the stars since 1839.
Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve founded it. He was the first director. Emperor Nicholas I supported the project.
The science started strong. The main tool was a 38-centimeter refracting telescope. That is a 15-inch lens. In 1839, it was the largest in the world. The quality of data from the start was high.
Big equipment followed. A 76-centimeter refractor arrived in 1878. This lens measured 30 inches wide. It held the title of the world’s largest for roughly ten years.
War changed the timeline. World War II destroyed the facility. The rebuilding took time. The observatory reopened in 1954.
It remains a site of significant astronomical history. The instruments defined an era of precise observation.
